Flood Relief Distribution Of Clothes In Cuddalore District

Cuddalore District of Tamil Nadu lies in the coastal line which is one of the most backward districts frequently hit by natural disasters. The district has a population of 2600880 (2011 census). Due to the continuous downpour of rainfall at Cuddalore District starting from first week of November 2015 and large-scale flooding the damage caused to people and their belongings was innumerable. Out of the 13 blocks in Cuddalore district, 11 blocks have been affected by flood and 8 blocks (Cuddalore, Kurinjipadi, Panruti, Parangipettai, Bhuvanagiri, Keerapalayam, Kattumannarkoil, Kumaratchi) have been put under the most affected list. The flash floods hit the most poor and marginalised communities who lost their houses and belongings; it also immensely affected their employment and livelihood.

Phia Foundation and Social Awareness Society for Youths (SASY) together distributed clothes which were donated by the Landmark Group to SASY towards the relief of the poor affected by floods in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. The relief clothes included 2 pants, 2 shirts, 1 T-shirt, a sweater and a leather belt which were distributed to 300 families from Vadugathirumebu, Ambedkar Nagar, Chinna Theru, Periya Theru villages which fall under Kavarapattu panchayat during the first phase of relief clothes distribution.

SASY and Phia plan to cover more than 6500 families from 50 villages in Cuddalore district. Phia and SASY will also distribute 1700 water filters donated by Aquaplus, to the households to provide them with pure and safe drinking water. Phia and SASY will continue to work together to provide more relief material and rehabilitation of the poor and marginalized families of most affected Cuddalore District.
