With the support from Caritas India, Phia Foundation is working with children from rag-picker communities in Madanpur Khadar JJ Colony (South Delhi) since April 2016. The majority among these communities have migrated from Assam to Delhi in search of livelihood opportunities. The rag-pickers in the area are scattered and do not have access to basic amenities such as health, education and sanitation and the children are worst affected due to these conditions. This project is built on the success of Jugnu education project in Bhowapur.

This project is aimed at educating 150 dropped out, non-enrolled and other deprived children through an innovative course of bridge school education to ensure universalization of primary education under similar setup of Jugnu Education project.

The classes for non-school going children are conducted on a daily basis, where educational support and nutritious food are provided. They are also provided with clean drinking water as the drinking water in the community has high arsenic content.

Phia has organised a training sessions on Right to Education with the fellows and community members to make them aware about the importance of education for their children and their rights.

The project team has facilitated the admission of 21 children in formal government schools and remedial classes have been setup for school going children to help them cope with the demands of formal schooling. The children who have been enrolled in the schools were assisting their parents either with garbage collection or sorting or household chores.

Phia foundation’s mission is to setup 100 such bridge schools across India to help the children of poor and marginalised communities who are in the rag-picking business and give them a dignified future.
