Emergencies

Phia Foundation aims to reduce the risks of disasters and respond rapidly when emergencies strike. We want to save the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable people in disaster-prone areas and help communities to stand firm in the face of future crises.

Cyclones, floods, droughts, earthquakes and other disasters strike frequently in India, bringing death and destruction.

Our partners work across India to help people and communities respond to emergencies, with a particular focus on the most vulnerable and socially excluded, who are always hit the hardest. People are often left injured, without food, water or shelter and many see their jobs and livelihoods ruined.

We will work with families and communities that suffer the consequences of natural and man-made disasters.

We will be among the first to respond, through our networks of grassroots organisations and local communities, and ensure food, clean water and other humanitarian aid quickly reaches the people who need it most.

Building disaster resilient communities

Phia Foundation aims to reduce the risks of disasters and respond rapidly when emergencies strike. We want to save the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable people in disaster-prone areas and help communities to stand firm in the face of future crises.

But our work with these communities will not end there. We are also committed to long-term support for places ravaged by disaster, understanding that people can face hardship for many years afterwards. We will help rebuild houses, lives and livelihoods, supporting communities to find ways to ‘build back better’ and be more resilient to future crises.

By working directly with affected communities and local organisations in these areas we can help to provide people with jobs and help them to either regain their former jobs or develop the skills to take on new roles.

Phia Foundation partners will work with communities to help them learn from previous disasters. By improving early warning systems and supporting communities to better plan for future emergencies we are helping to reduce the impact when disasters strike.

We promote climate-resilient, sustainable and diverse livelihoods, sustainable and renewable energy models, and community-based disaster risk reduction models for poor and excluded communities.

Phia Foundation can’t prevent cyclones and earthquakes, but we can help people and communities to be better prepared and protected.

Emergency response

Phia Foundation aims to respond to the frequent and often devastating emergencies throughout India.

We will work with corporate foundations, individuals and others to provide the support people need both in the immediate aftermath of a disaster and to help them get their lives and livelihoods back together.

By providing critical needs such as clean water and food we will help people overcome the initial trauma and threat of a disaster. And we aim to remain with them to help them re-build their lives and livelihoods

Back on track

After a humanitarian disaster, Phia Foundation and its partners aim to quickly reach people with lifesaving help and work with affected communities to rebuild their livelihoods.

Parts of Tamil Nadu were hit by heavy rains in October and November 2015, bringing Chennai to a standstill, forcing schools, bridges and the airport to close, and trains to be cancelled.

Phia Foundation and its partners were active in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, carrying out several assessments and response actions.

Phia provided disaster relief to the affected districts including food items and non-food items, the restoration and installation of water sources, the provision of drinking water (filtration systems), hygiene kits, shelter kits, and educational material – shoes and bags for school children. ‬‬‬‬‬‬
